RACING MEASURE NOT EXPECTED TO PASS IN SENATE
Raleigh March 14 With the Asheville Buncombe county race track bill to legalize gambling on horse races in Buncombe county with pari mutuel betting machines back on the senate calendar and an unfavorable report it is now generally conceded the bill will be decisively defeated on third reading likely Monday night or Tuesday afternoon Many senators who voted for it now see a state wide angle and fear a wedge toward broader gambling A strong lobby and opposition by ministers and lay citizens pressure the senate committee on Counties Cities and Towns but the panel seems likely to defeat the measure

Banks Measure Has Close Call in North Carolina

Proponents argue the change would restore public confidence after 16 months with over 100 state bank failures while funding remains from examination fees.
