General Pershing reported that the American counter raid of March 5 was conducted by the 42nd Rainbow Division, composed of national guardsmen. General Gerrard, commander of the Eighth French Army, personally congratulated the division's commander on their conduct.
Weather favors fighting as each side presses trench raids along the western front. French repulse German assault in Champagne with heavy losses, while American raiding parties and gunners bolster sectors northwest of Toul and east of Lunéville. British raids near Polygon Wood yield prisoners and machine guns amid continued German artillery activity. In Palestine British advances near Jaffa and along the Jerusalem–Nabulus road meet Turkish resistance.
J Elwood Cox a life long Republican says there are far more serious issues than petty politics. He comments on Governor Bicketts no politics plan after returning from Washington where he was on business. Cox once ran for governor and his views will interest many party members.
Raleigh March 14 The jury convicted Marcus Edwards of first degree murder in the December slaying of his wife Beulah Edwards. Death by electric chair is the penalty, but sentencing by Judge Stary was not yet issued. Edwards claimed the killing was not premeditated and remarked to inmates that he expected a second degree verdict.
A Canisteo valley flood swamped Rochester causing widespread flood damage. Scores of families evacuated as the factory district and many buildings were submerged. Firemen and police rescued residents by boat while trains remained halted and rainfall continued to raise water levels. No lives reported lost.
Washington reports meat exports to the allies will rise 50 percent and may double under negotiations by the food administration with allied food representatives. The aim is to build up the allied meat reserve from a large U S surplus, which has already relaxed meat consumption rules. The allies would provide ships to move the meat.
Washington on March 14 Director General McAdoo ordered railroads to inventory materials and supplies on hand as of December 31 when private centers ceased for government administration of purchases. Inventories must begin by May 1 and reflect conditions on December 31 with recent inventories usable if dated within 90 days.
The trial of Mrs. Margaret Hireh charged with attempted blackmail of Atlanta mayor Asa G. Candler opened before Judge Benjamin Hill in Fulton County Superior Court. Spectators packed the room, many women, as Candler testified about Hireh’s February visit to his office and the basis for the alleged demands.
The local exemption board received the second draft call for the national army. Ten High Point registrants will be entrained around March 31 for Camp Jackson. Guilford County assigns 39 men. Greensboro 20. rural board nine. High Point ten. Separately 24 Black men from High Point are to be entrained for Camp Grant on April 1.
J Elwood Cox returned from a two day executive committee session of the National Bank Section of the American Bankers Association in Washington. He said Senator Owen introduced 20 senate bills affecting national banks and bankers debated them with officials including John S Williams of the Comptroller of the Currency and Federal Reserve Board members. The third Liberty loan bond was discussed with support pledged, but final terms and size remain undetermined though an earlier figure of 5 billion dollars was considered. Revenue from income and excess profits taxes may reach about 2.4 billion in June, reducing bond needs.
A cablegram from France confirms Thomas Hitchcock a seventeenth year old Lafayette Escadrille member was captured by Germans but unharmed. The message reached his father in Westbury New York via a relative serving with the French army.
Washington report says February yielded enough dynamite to blow up half the Hog Island yard. Dudley R. Kennedy, head of industrial relations, told the senate committee that secret service agents have not traced who placed the explosive.
A. Atkins aged 69 died this morning shortly after 2 o'clock at the local hospital after a period of illness. A Wilkes county native, he had lived in the city in recent years. Survived by widow and two daughters Miss Atkins and Mrs J T Burrus. Funeral from Mrs Burrus home on the Boulevard tomorrow at 3. Interment in Oakwood cemetery.
The hospital ship Guilford Castle was attacked in the Channel on March 10 as two torpedoes were fired. one hit the bow but the ship reached port. Many sick and wounded were transferred to a hospital, marking a second hospital ship attack in British waters after the Glenart Castle sinking with about 150 lives lost.

Peking reports March 8 capture of engineers Pursell and Nyrl by bandits near Yeh-Sien Hunan. Chinese soldiers surround the captors while the status of the engineers is learned. Siemens Carey Railway officials in New York identify Pursell and Sell as G A Kyle of Portland and others as potential relatives.
J. Will Lindsay departed Tuesday evening for Waco Texas where he will serve as a clerk with the aviation corps following his new appointment.
Master Alvin Scott Parker Jr. underwent an appendicitis operation at High Point Hospital and is reported to be doing splendidly today.
L. M. Ammen of Greensboro was in the city as a business visitor for several hours yesterday afternoon, meeting with local merchants and inspecting facilities.
Leroy Smith, a Black man from Raleigh, stands trial for his life in Wake County Superior Court for criminally assaulting the wife of a Garner lumber dealer. The jury was selected from a 150-member special venire and the state began presenting witnesses at 2:30 PM with three leading Raleigh attorneys defending Smith.
London reports say Tokio relayed news of Siberia tensions and talks of Japanese-Siberian negotiations. China warns Bolshevik forces at Harbin could trigger war, while Cossacks arrest Bolshevik leaders at Blagoveshchensk. Semenoff’s anti Bolshevik army cited as Russian provisional force in Siberia. Parliament to discuss Japan's Siberia intervention and Bal four reply to the German chancellor.
The cotton market opened steady with a gain of one to nine points amid disappointing cables and reports of progress with new crop preparations. Overnight buying orders supported May and October futures, with May around 31.85 and October near 30.40 as the session began.
Miss Lena Barbour leaves High Point for Washington to join the government in the war risk insurance branch of the treasury as stenographer. She has served as Tate Furniture Company stenographer for three years and is the second local to join the federal service, following Esse Mae Houtchings. Mrs. W. H. L. Neise of Jamestown, after a sanatorium operation Monday, is improving.
London reports an agreement between Britain and the United States to seize Dutch ships next week for allied use. A total of 1,000,000 tons will be allocated 70 percent to the United States, 15 percent to British ports, and 15 percent to other allies. Owners’ rights will be safeguarded. ships will be insured and armed. Any sunk vessel will be replaced at the earliest possible time after the war.
The United States and Great Britain issued a final notice to the Netherlands that if the allied use agreement is not accepted by March 18 Dutch ships will be taken over for allied use. Minister Augustus Phillips plans to meet President Wilson to seek a modification of this plan.
Camp Sevier South Carolina March 4 Special Brig Gen L D Tyson commander of the 59th infantry brigade left today for Washington to take the routine physical examination required at intervals of all general officers Brig Gen G G Gatley commander of the 55th field artillery brigade has just returned from his exam and it is expected that Tyson will return soon Brig Gen S L Faison commander of the 60th infantry brigade and acting division commander will go up Major Gen C D P Townsley permanent division commander who arrived for an inspection tour will stop in Washington for his exam and may be accompanied by Lieut Col R B McBride chief of staff who left for France after taking up duties Capt B F Hogue the general s aide is expected to return with him.
Washington March 14 Secretary Baker will personally discuss with General Pershing how American casualty lists will be issued. The move follows a protest by George Creel against listing deaths and injuries without including the men’s addresses and after the president asked the War Department to have Baker raise the matter.
