Real Estate Men Rally Over Guilford Levy Bill
High Point real estate men prepared for a second push at the Burrus bill setting a 12 cent cap for welfare levies to fund the unemployed in Guilford. They argued the measure could save city taxes, with City Manager J M Knox saying a 20 000 to 26 000 saving is possible and that current welfare rules force extra funding from 20 000 to 25 000 next year. County Attorney Lee B Fentress noted the cap may not be fully utilized given Guilford's 150 million valuation. City officials opposed the levy, citing concerns over extravagance and county expenditures. The public hearing followed a Raleigh senate committee session.

The board favors consolidating relief programs with the county as the proper welfare unit and vows to ensure proper care for the unemployables. They seek economies before raising the county levy from 3.2 to 12 cents and want assurance the city tax rate will drop if the levy increases.
