R I Orange of Burkeville Virginia was killed by a train Saturday morning near Burkeville after alighting from a Farmville bound train. He was 60 and is survived by two sons and a daughter including J W Orange of High Point who received the telegram.
Durham March 13 The condition of General Julian S. Carr commander in chief of the United Confederate Veterans who is seriously ill with pleurisy at his home here showed no improvement today He had a restless night and was very weak this morning.
New York March 13 United Gas Improvement Company the Welsbach Company the City Illuminating Company and eight individuals were indicted by a federal grand jury for violations of the Sherman anti trust law.
Pretoria reports government troops press advances against rebels with 2200 prisoners taken and control of high ground near Westcliff. Maj Gen Devander’s forces push rebels from Benoni while Krugersdorp is reached as operations expand toward Johannesburg. London dispatch notes money for the red revolution came from abroad and peace may return soon.
A fourteen year old girl and Marvin Clodfelter were arrested near the Southern tracks after spending Saturday night in the woods. The girl pleaded guilty to vagrancy while the boy pleaded not guilty to disorderly conduct. Judge Royal postponed judgment, with the girl possibly sent to the Samarcand home if guardians reach an agreement with police.
Washington March 13. The comptroller of the currency issued a call for the condition of all national banks at the close of business Friday March 10.
Washington report says the War Finance Corporation announced 91 advances for agricultural and livestock purposes totaling 2,504,000 dollars. North Carolina loans amount to 99,000 dollars with other states also included in the package.
High Point launches a two week protracted revival beginning Sunday at 11 00 am with evangelists from the Southern Baptist convention and local singers. The campaign spans High Point and neighboring Piedmont cities Greensboro Reidsville Asheboro and includes daily services through March 25. Leaders include Rev H T Stephens B Townsend J A Scott and L O Vermillion with singers W P Martin L B Padgett Carol C Esley and J T Williams.
The showing of spring fashions in High Point starts Wednesday as merchants ready display windows and racks with the latest in mens and womens ready made apparel shoes and furnishings. The Enterprise will publish a spring fashion edition tomorrow detailing local merchants efforts. Merchants compete to offer the most attractive line this season with carefully bought goods and relief from price declines over the past two years.
Henson a one legged shoe string seller was arrested for drunkenness in a cafe in High Point. In municipal court he admitted intoxication but argued his disability prevented disorder. He pleaded for a chance to leave town and said he had funds to do so, then rushed toward the door with his crutches. His home is listed as Danville Kentucky.
Oasis Temple Shriners plan a spring ceremonial in High Point May 25 for 3000 attendees. Local leaders under Charles Long select committees, appoint Robert Brockett secretary, and organize entertainment with Harry Raymond chairing the planning group. Oasis Temple members and Sheraton manager Leslie Fairchild back the effort.
Evangelist Chas BK Ford of Charlotte will conduct revival services this week at the Seventh Day Adventist church in the southern city area. Services start nightly at 7 30. The evangelist and church members say each lecture will be of vital interest and extend a cordial invitation to the public.
The Supreme Court ruled that railroads within a state engaged in interstate commerce are not exclusively under federal court jurisdiction in operating and abandoning their properties. The decision clarifies state and federal roles in railroad regulation.
Tei white men were arrested in a local barber shop on gambling charges Sunday at 2 AM. Police testified coins rattled as if pitched gambling while several men drank. All denied gambling. some said they were only passing time. One man drunk was fined $5 and costs after acquittal. Others were found guilty but costs suspended. Arrested by Police members Riddle Morrig and Stout.
London reports the British army estimates for the coming year total 62,390,000 pounds, down from 93,714,000 pounds the previous year. The naval estimate stands at 64,893,750 pounds, announced by the House of Commons in the afternoon.
