Homemade Cathedral Completed by Davidson County Man
M. M. Smith, a 65 year old elevator operator from Concord, spent about 10,000 hours over 14 years building a wooden cathedral in his living room. Using a rasp and a 11 cent pocket knife, he created a fixture with 8,000 pieces of wood, electric lights, and a radio speaker, featuring biblical figures and animals, topped by a foot high steeple. He crafted two flank pieces as successors to the main piece but later considered them inadequate and offered them for sale.
