McCarthy Told To Prove Or Retract His Charges

Washington March 11 The state department challenged Senator McCarthy to substantiate his charge of communism in the department or retract the claim. Deputy Undersecretary John E. Peurifoy urged McCarthy to present evidence or withdraw the allegations as the issue concerns national policy. The Virginia Carolina natural gas hearing closed late today as the State Corporation Commission prepares for oral arguments Wednesday before issuing a ruling. Hero of Indian War Succumbs

LEAD, S. D., March 11 Charles A. Windolph 98 the nation s oldest Congressional Medal of Honor winner died here today at the home of a daughter. He served with Col George A Custer at the Little Big Horn and earned the Medal for exposing himself to enemy fire while comrades retrieved water for the wounded at a waterhole. He also received a Purple Heart for wounds from that action. Windolph was wounded June 26, 1876 and received his eye in time on his 95th birthday.

Opposition Rises To New Price Supports Plan In Senate

In Washington on March 11 a strong Senate opposition formed against a compromise price supports proposal. Senator Aiken warned the tentative agreement could cost up to 200 million dollars and remove production controls, while Majority Leader Lucas signaled a presidential veto if approved. Conferees said the plan adds 1.2 million acres of cotton, 850 thousand of wheat, and over 100 thousand peanuts, to bolster the farm program under renewed allotments.

Air Force Transport Crashes in Arkansas Killing Pilot

An Air Force C 47 transport crashed and burned three miles southwest of Hope Arkansas during heavy rain, killing the pilot while the three other crewmen bailed out and survived. Names were not released. The aircraft was based at Fairfield California and had been at Barksdale Louisiana earlier. A separate private plane crash near Malvern, Arkansas killed one person and injured another.

Strike Called Off in 11 Day Air Line Labor Fight

New York March 11 Striking CIO ground crewmen called off their 11 day walkout against American Airlines after a nationwide vote. About 3,100 favored settlement terms to 390 against. The agreement retrades pay, offers severance for each year up to eight years and ensures no subcontracting for maintenance by qualified workers. Fringe issues include additional vacation and extended sick leave. The pact retroactive to Jan 1 runs to Sept 30, 1951.

County Official Shot To Death In Jefferson

Greene county official J. L. Armstrong 69 was shot four times in his auto on Jefferson main street. Lawrence Yennerall about 50 was arrested after firing at Armstrong who had helped Yennerall in the previous primary. Armstrong a veteran Democratic office holder and noted horseman.
