At Dorothea Dix in Raleigh Dr. Eggett Rassekh handles 150 to 160 patients with 11 psychiatrists across units. Other units house 146 and 57 patients per psychiatrist as the hospital treats about 1,800 mentally ill with 5,327 admissions in 1970–71. Staff shortages hinder rehab and long term care, prompting calls for more aides, rehabilitation teams and volunteers.
