School Machinery Bill Nearing House Passage This Week

The school machinery bill, after week long study, is to be reported to the house and placed on the calendar for action Tuesday or Wednesday. It requires three readings before final passage and then similar three readings in the senate. The bill preserves the State School Commission with the Lieutenant Governor as chairman and the State Superintendent as vice chairman, not ex officio. The finance committee rejected making the State Superintendent the chair, noting the commission controls about 25 million dollars annually, more than the highway agency. Governor Hoey reportedly did not support making the superintendent the head.
