McKenney Explains Bridge Rule Change Series Start

This article begins a 12 part series on new contract bridge laws effective April 1. The 1935 scoring remains mostly unchanged except the 50 point bonus for making a doubled contract is restored. The bonus applies regardless of vulnerability or redouble status, affecting duplicate play more than rubber.

Bridge Scoring Change Affects Doubled Contracts

In a hand analysis, the declarer stays in three diamonds doubled though four hearts might be making. Under new laws, South gains 670 points for three diamonds doubled versus 620 for four hearts. In party bridge, the extra dou bled contract points become influential. If one card is exposed, that card becomes the up card and the 21st card goes to the other player.

Standardized Can Sizes To Ease Postwar Shopping

OPA will simplify ration point tables and ease shopping once odd sized cans exit the market. WPB bans nonstandard cans but large stocks remain. Repealing recapture is unlikely though a rule allowing voluntary sale back of excess stock to stores or friends may be considered.

Rationing Tightens As Oil and Food Controls Hit Home
