A group of rebels seized Sean M. Holly, the U S labor attaché in Guatemala, and demanded the release of four jailed guerrillas. The FAR set a 48 hour deadline as police reported Holly forced from his station wagon at gunpoint and taken to a car. The four captives include Jose Manuel Aguirre Monzon and Jose A Sierra among others.
Space program aims for television monitored unmanned planetary tours this decade and considers sending humans to Mars in the 1980s. Nixon plans a middle ground to curb inflation while launching gradual space exploration, following Agnew task force guidance.
The Senate defeated proposals to weaken the 1965 Voting Rights Act renewal and plans to tackle additional Southern challenges next week. An attempt to add an 18 year old voting provision was blocked as floor action continued.
In Los Angeles a judge appoints Charles Manson's attorney after ruling he is hopelessly unable to defend himself in the Tate murder case. Manson protested, and three followers were held in contempt. Judge Keene cites Manson's limited literacy and poor ability to follow court rules. The trial remains scheduled, with Manson to be represented by Charles Hellopeter unless he selects another attorney.
New York AP reports a rare total solar eclipse crossing the US from Florida to Nantucket with a 85 mile wide shadow racing at 1500 miles per hour. Eye safety warnings accompany forecasts of potentially poor viewing conditions in several southern states and CAP alert for up to 500 sky watchers traveling to Cape Cod and nearby areas.
Federal officials estimate a heavy oil spill from tankers fouled about 1000 miles of shoreline from Afognak to the Trinity Islands near Kodiak. At least 10000 birds have died, with authorities unable to identify a responsible vessel as bad weather delayed aerial surveys.
Senate critics say the president's Laos statement glosses over key facts. They press for public testimony from administration officials and for withdrawal of U S personnel involved in air strikes. House figures on Laos military spending are also sought.
AFL-CIO official Lane Kirkland warns rising unemployment under Nixon anti inflation policy may derail efforts to place more Black workers in private sector jobs. He cites a 4.2 percent jobless rate and a 388000 increase to 3.8 million unemployed, noting the slack economy hurts the National Alliance of Businessmen goals and housing funding requests.
Israeli raiders crossed into Lebanon and blew up five buildings in the village of Aita Ech Chaab after 37 sabotage acts since January 1. One Arab fighter was killed, two captives taken. Beirut said two Israeli forces also crossed into Lebanon killing a Lebanese soldier and wounding a civilian. Earlier, Israeli jets clashed with Egyptian MIG21s near the Suez Canal.
