Rocky Mount March 17. Robert Lee Allebrook, 39, a laundry employee, was found fatally shot in a storeroom of the plant where he worked. Dr. J G Raby Edgecombe county coroner pronounced it suicide after an inquest held this morning. Contracted inquest followed by employee findings.
Highway safety week is under way in North Carolina with newspapers radio and theaters cooperating to cut highway fatalities. A safety film was shown last night locally and today at 100 theaters statewide. The governor urges motorists to look first think clearly and drive carefully as the toll of highway deaths reached 1,112 last year.
Washington reports Japanese exports of cotton piece goods fell sharply in January to 162,939,000 yards, the smallest since 1934. For Sep February period, Japanese imports of raw cotton totaled 409,199 bales, down from 1,788,000 last season. American cotton imports were about 101,650 bales versus 750,000 a year earlier.
London March 7 Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain told the House of Commons that if talks with Italy and Germany progress Britain will speed up a gigantic five year armament program while remaining open to disarmament if negotiations fail. He defended his policy against charges of bias toward dictatorships and emphasized the aim of preventing war through frank talks with Italy and Germany. The debate focused on defense spending as fleets and armies conduct extensive exercises west of Gibraltar as negotiations toward a four power peace framework with France proceed.
Baron Gottfried Von Cramm, famed German tennis player, was taken into custody by criminal police on charges described as serious and moral delinquencies. Police confirmed his arrest but did not detail the allegations. He had just returned from a global tour days earlier.
