Massachusetts firms return as survey shows gains

The Associated Industries of Massachusetts announced that manufacturers who left the state are returning and many new industries have been established. Key factors include eliminating the local machinery tax suspension of the six oclock law and richer resources. The survey cites 421 new industries or major plant expansions since 1936 with boots and shoes leading, restoring prosperity to about 4600 workers. The machinery tax cut saved over 4 million in 1936 and 3 million in the current year. Suspension of the six oclock law halted textile migration by allowing women to work later in mills.
