Coal Operators Agree To Talk About Higher Pay
Coal operators agreed to negotiate with John L. Lewis on higher wages if coal can meet country needs with a shorter work week. The talks set for March 12 involve wage and hours, with a possible reopening of the foremans issue and a return to open shop status debated since 1939. The 54 hour week for miners may be trimmed if production goals allow, with any pay rise likely boosting coal prices and affecting competition with gas and oil.
