124 Die As British Jet Crashes On Mt Fuji
A British BOAC four engine jet crashed on Mt Fuji in Japan killing all 124 aboard including 84 Americans from Thermo King Corp of Minneapolis on a group tour. Rescue teams recovered bodies and officials noted the crash followed high winds and glowing smoke with no sign of explosion. The event comes amid multiple recent major air disasters near Tokyo.

Ex-High Pointers Die In Jet Crash
A former High Point couple, Charles G. Varner and his wife, were among 124 killed when a British Overseas Airways Corp. Boeing 707 crashed near Mount Fuji after departing Tokyo. Varner, a Charlotte dealer for Thermo King, and his wife had been on a tour organized by a U.S. truck refrigeration equipment maker. The group had begun Feb. 26 after a dealers’ convention in San Francisco and planned to visit Hong Kong before returning home via Honolulu. Varner’s brother and mother were in High Point and Charlotte respectively.
