New Trial Ordered For Doomed Man

The North Carolina Supreme Court ordered a new trial for John Thomas Alford in the Nov 6 1974 killing of Gregory Leonard, ruling Alford’s request to separate trials from co defendant Sherman Carter should have been granted. The court found error in Carter’s conviction and death sentence though Carter confessed to the crime and implicated Larry Waddell. Leonard, an auto parts store customer, was slain during an armed robbery. witnesses identified Alford and Carter as robbers. The court allowed use of Carter’s confession if introduced, potentially changing outcomes. Justice Huskins dissented, noting substantial evidence against Alford and that Carter’s confession was not admitted at trial.

CP&L Argues Cooling Towers Not Needed

CP&L told the EPA that environmental damage would not justify the 73.3 million cost of cooling towers for its Brunswick nuclear plant near Southport. The testimony, filed for an April 5 EPA law judge hearing in Raleigh, argues the current system withdraws large Cape Fear estuary water and towers would reduce intake by spraying and recirculating water.
