Two members of a North Vietnamese delegation flew home today amid reports they met secretly with U.N. Secretary-General U Thant in Burma. The group’s chief envoy Col Ha Van Lau and Foreign Office official Nguyen Tu Huyen departed, while Consul General Le Tong Sun stayed behind. Thant was traveling to New York and did not comment.
Two jet planes from Laos bombed Lang Vei near the Laotian border killing 83 civilians and wounding 200 as U S command reports. The raiders' identity remains undetermined with speculation of Communist staging. Delta-winged jets were described by Capt Duffy who overlooks Lang Vei. pilots not confirmed.
North Carolina Senators Sam J. Ervin Jr. and B. Everett Jordan urge President Johnson to nominate Susie M. Sharp of the North Carolina Supreme Court to replace retiring Justice Tom Clark. The letter was received by the White House today.
In Levings Park Rockford Illinois two 14 year olds Wayne Mullendore and Ronald Johnson were found shot while kneeling against a wall in a pavilion. Investigators described the slaying as possibly revenge driven with sex not involved."}
North Vietnamese sources report about 35,000 troops amassed along the 17th parallel with three divisions in the area. Two divisions have long been in place near the demilitarized zone, with a third moving within striking distance of the border in the past 30 days. General Westmoreland urged continued bombing to halt Hanoi’s troop movements.
Defense figures show U S combat deaths in Vietnam increasing at a rate close to Communist casualties. Secretary McNamara cites enemy casualties up 40 to 50 percent over the last three months as U S losses also climb, with 1967 weekly death rates near 1966 levels for the period.
A North Carolina House bill aims to ensure adequate and continuing ambulance services for citizens. It endorses private provision where feasible, with counties or cities stepping in if private services fail. All ambulances would be state-licensed and inspected, with sanitation and equipment rules set by the State Board of Health.
