Wilmington's tall and talented cagers defeated High Point Black 67 to 63 in overtime to capture the North Carolina State Class AAA basketball championship. The Bison endured a tight game and battled back from an early deficit to seal the victory.
Ken Prosser tapped in a regulation layup with two seconds left to force overtime as Wilmington defeated the Bison 67 63 after a 59 59 tie. The Bison failed to score a field goal in overtime while Wilmington used eight free throws to seal the win. Coach Tony Simeon praised his team’s comeback from a nine point hole, while Wilmington coach Leon Brogden lauded a fine ball game and his third Class AAA state title in ten years.
Arlington: Two schoolboys aged 13 and 11 admitted shooting their father while he watched TV and dragging the body to a shed where it lay undiscovered for six weeks. Detectives say they were angry at him and learned how to kill on television.

President Eisenhower nominated Charles Evans Whittaker a 56 year old Kansas City jurist to the Supreme Court for the Reed vacancy. Whittaker a Republican on the federal bench since 1954 was notified by phone and flew to Washington. Missouri Senators Symington and-also Democrats-praised the choice noting his appellate service and historic state appointment.
An eight year old boy phoned the City Water Department to unlock a meter cover after a playmate dropped his pencil inside. Meter reader Elmer Anderson retrieved a stubby wood pencil chewed by use. The youngster said the pencil helps him make the best grades.
Two Lagrange police on the night beat spotted seven nude youths swimming in a fountain pool at Court Square in 32 degree weather. The men, reporting an initiation into a Georgia Tech fraternity in Atlanta, said the stunt required photographs of the venture.

Harold E Talbott 69, former secretary of the Air Force and aviation pioneer, died in bed at 3 30 am in Palm Beach Florida after arriving for a vacation. His death was attributed to a stroke by his nephew. Cremation planned in Miami and memorials set in New York and Dayton. His resignation followed a Senate probe into a NY firm connected to a 132 032 payout during his tenure and coinciding with the 1956 campaign.
