Halifax March 3 Firemen surveyed ice coated ruins of the Queen Hotel where a blaze yesterday trapped sleeping guests. Police report 25 missing and feared dead, four unidentified bodies recovered, and 20 injured including two firemen. Damages estimated at 800000. Dental aid sought to identify charred remains.
National Commander Stephen F. Chadwick and Auxiliary National President Mrs. James F. Morris will address the Spring Post Officers conference of the North Carolina Legion department in Shelby. A memorial service is planned, with Burgin Pennell presiding over post officers and auxiliaries to follow. A parade and joint Legion Auxiliary meeting cap the events, with a Forty and Eight wreck scheduled Saturday night.
Washington March 3 A dispute between two government home financing agencies appears to head for White House settlement. John H Fahey testified against expanding FHA mortgage insurance and a senator suggested President Roosevelt decide the matter. Fahey read a critical Home Loan Bank board letter protesting FHA financing existing homes at government cost and high homeowner fees. In six years Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt transformed the White House role into active public service. She plans to christen a trans Atlantic plane this afternoon and perhaps fly in it. On Sunday she begins her seventh year with a long lecture tour, adding to more than 200000 miles traveled since March 4 1984, while recalling her vow to curtail activities before the presidency.
Clifford Redmond a lanky Hoosier hired hand admitted killing Paul Brand and Mary Jayne Brand at their Edinburg area farm while drunk on a birthday spree. The couple were shot in bed with a .22 rifle. Brand was also stabbed and beaten. Their 12 year old daughter Gloria testified of a rape claim she made, which Redmond denied and authorities said an attack attempt was possible but no rape occurred. Redmond was transported from Vandalia Illinois to Indiana for questioning after arrest in Ramsey Illinois. The motive remains under investigation by State police and State's Attorney Floyd Sonnemann.
Report from Shanghai describes three Japanese columns advancing in northern Kiangsu with air support and tanks against about 60 000 Chinese forces including the 57th and 89th Central Chinese brigades and guerrillas. Other Japanese actions claim Hankow occupation and push toward Shayang and Shasi as Haichow remains in Chinese hands.
