About 150 church members met yesterday to protest the discharge of Rev. Charles M. Jones from Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church. The group approved a six man steering committee to draft a formal protest to Orange Presbytery. A presbytery judicial commission ordered Jones’ pastoral relations severed “in the interests of religion” but he remains technically a pastor in good standing within the presbytery.
Duke University announces a summer program admitting high school graduates directly into the nursing training to ease shortages. President Hollis Edens notes the plan aims to double nurse graduates by 1956 compared with current output, per Dean Florence K. Wilson.

He praised RO K troops and stated two thirds of the 155 mile front are manned by ROK forces, with more RO K units to be integrated as officers are available.
United Nations forces repelled a major Red assault near Little Gibraltar and multiple center and southern sector attacks. In 12 hours of fighting the Reds lost about 200 killed or wounded, while UN, American, French and Thai troops held positions amid mud and thawing hills.

Victims include Lee Roy Combs of Virginia in a tank truck crash near Winston-Salem, James Leake shot at a Forest City cafe, 13 year old Paul Eason burned in Halifax, Silas Davenport with fatal burns in Creswell, Maggie Ramsey found drowned in the French Broad near Marshall, William Yarborough killed on Main Street Louisburg, and Cape Fear River tug galley boy Jimmy Daniels burned from a stove explosion in Fayetteville.

After a White House call, House Speaker Martin and Senate Republican Leader Taft said Hawaii statehood passage should come within about three weeks. They expect Eisenhower to submit a Cabinet level reorganization plan for the Federal Security Agency next week. Taft forecast Senate approval of statehood with possible debate but no filibuster, and the offshore tidelands oil bill to reach the House floor soon. They also discussed a Presidential Council of Economic Advisers, with a three member group likely.
