Roosevelt calls for a thorough study of the NRA arms program as the United States plans to strengthen and modernize its armed forces. The effort targets air and naval forces to ensure faster deployment and greater deterrence amid rising tensions overseas.
Guilford county plans to legalize liquor if a countywide election is called. Greensboro and High Point seek 50 percent of profits each from liquor sales within their cities, with the remaining half for the county. The proposal will be forwarded to Raleigh for approval. Officials argued to move before the legislative session ends. No petition or election plan has yet been filed.
President Roosevelt advised Congress to study the NRA for guidance in crafting new wage and hour laws and other NRA objectives. A special committee report recommends one body handle trade practice negotiations while another enforces compliance, and calls for balanced maximum hours and fixed minimum wages.

Police Chief H V Yocum reports three men robbed a bookmaker at a restaurant in Miami Beach on March 2 and escaped with about $10. Victims and proprietor Dave Singer say most money remained as they kicked bills and tables. No victim report or confirmation from Singer.

Found unconscious on the highway between Thomasville and Lexington, a teen girl identified as 17 or 18 from Gastonia was brought to City Memorial Hospital in a frozen condition by Green and Sons Ambulance. She later spoke and said she had planned to walk from High Point to Thomasville when abducted, then dumped at the western city limits. She recovered enough to leave the hospital the next morning.
Melvin Coggins 41, a farmer, confessed to Sheriff C V Faulkner that he killed Henry Juneau 40, a prosperous Cas farmer, and will not seek bond after being held in Rocky Mount for murder. He also admitted intimacies with Mrs Fogleman, mother of four, who remains jailed in Nashville with no charges yet filed. The body of Mrs Fogleman was found in a wood three days before the arrest as neighbors searched after her mule returned pulling an empty wagon.
Langley Field Virginia March 2 Army fliers prepared to load and bomb the four engine flying fortress that completed a cross country flight from the Pacific coast. The ship arrived from Fort Bragg North Carolina yesterday and was formally delivered to Col Charles B Oldfield by Maj Barney Giles the flight commander.
Referee Peter B Olney Jr was expected to render a decision late today on reorganization plans for the Consolidated Textile Corporation. The case concerns financing and restructuring of mills in Lynchburg Virginia Lafayette and Pelham Georgia Shelby and Burlington North Carolina Henderson Kentucky and North Adams Massachusetts.
Government fiscal officials planned to canvass financial aspects of a broad new railroad pension system. Secretary Morgenthau and senior advisors would confer with Arthur J. Altmeyer of the social security board and Murray W. Latimer of the railroad retirement board.
Laurinburg March 2 Scotland county commissioners set April 6 election on raising county taxes 20 cents per 100 valuation to finance extending school terms to nine months.
London March 2 The British government’s cheap money policy seems to win the battle against inflation as government securities rise while long term yields drift down. Bank of England support for securities is cited as proof bankers prefer stable money and ministers emphasize the tripartite currency pledge with the United States and France remains intact amid linked small economies.
Vote tally from The Enter FEM Stopes poll shows 1298 ballots with 936 from High Point proper and 362 elsewhere. Rural areas cast 175 votes 13.4 percent. city opposed 548 and favored 358. Lexington 12 against 8 for. Thomasville 68 against 46 for. rural oppositions 33 and 9 in favor.
In Greensboro on March 2 Willis H. Slane W T Powell and Ben L Herman were appointed by the county board of elections as the three members of the new High Point township board of elections. Slane is the Republican member while Powell and Herman are Democrats. The appointing action followed recommendations from the chairmen of the county Democratic and Republican executive committees.
A sit down strike closed the Murray Corporation of America main plant in Detroit this afternoon. The United Automobile Workers reported about 5,000 of 6,500 employees participated in the action.
Charlotte March 2 Lieut L R Fisher who led patrol raids that netted 15000 worth of liquor in suburban night clubs was called to testify at a Mecklenburg civil service commission hearing into charges of negligence against Rural Police Chief Vic Fesper.
Greensboro traveling salesman D. M. Morris died in his Raleigh hotel room late last night. Coroner L. M. Waring said death likely resulted from an acute indigestion attack.
Spain's government says agents seized about 30 alleged plotters including the Marquis de San Vicente in Valencia and Madrid. Arrests focused on Almeria where insurgent forces advance toward the city from Malaya while government troops push toward Motril and Granda along the coast.
Raleigh dispatch reports the house approving a measure to regulate industrial hours and a senate backed child labor bill. The plan sets a 65 hour limit for men and 48 hours for women with exemptions, and raises the child labor minimum to 16 while barring under 18 from certain hazards. The Halstead bill proposes a 5 million dollar bond issue.
Judge Felix E. Alley heard D. B. Swaringen's suit alleging election irregularities in Lee Poplin's seat on the Wilkes county board of commissioners. Swaringen, a Republican, claims 100 votes were not counted in one township and Poplin was certified by a two vote margin. The judge took the case yesterday.
Justice Department agents and police searched today for 12 year old James T. Brady Jr the son of the veterans administration solicitor. Brady disappeared after leaving home yesterday for school and investigators fear he may have fallen victim to a disgruntled client.
Mary Hurt also known as Mary Moore, a 60 year old Black woman, was found dead beside the High Point Thomasville and Denton railroad near Wbert Swaim's farm. Sheriff’s investigators ruled exposure caused death. she had been dead about 24 hours.
In St. Petersburg Florida the Anti Saloon League of America plans to mobilize 10 million youths to pledge total abstinence. The opening program Safety vs Disaster will premiere during the convention with state groups presenting plays to win signatures for pledge cards. Bishop James Cannon Jr. of Los Angeles, addressing the convention, blamed former President Herbert Hoover for not urging Congress to recruit support against illegal liquor.
In New York on March 2 a steel strike was averted by wage and hour concessions from major producers, sparking renewed buying in stocks. The market rose fractions to 4 points as profit taking appeared after a rapid opening, with A. S. Steel leading gains beyond 117 and lifting Bethlehem, Crucible, Otis, American Steel Foundries, Republic, and Youngstown Sheet and Tube.
Newton March 2 Catawba county commissioners voted to cancel the April civil term of the superior court.
Pay raises granted to more than 190000 steel workers as wage talks open between John L. Lewis committee and Carnegie-Illinois Steel chief Benjamin Fairless. Philip Murray and four union executives present proposals for a pact covering 120000 company employees amid a tense start to unheralded negotiations.
Greensboro report states Charles H. Robertson, collector of internal revenue, announced that North Carolina's first eight months of the current fiscal year totaled $203,598,296.78, up about $20,000,000 from the prior corresponding period.
Reading union officials report another Berks county plant closed in the sit down strike. About 2,000 workers idle with 2,500 more in mills or on picket duty. Leaders vow county wide action to halt operations at nearly 24 mills employing about 12,000 hosiery workers while demanding union recognition. Berkshire Knitting mill has been on strike since October 1 and manufacturers cite disorder accompanying the action.
