Two NC Senators Oppose ERA Referendum

With the North Carolina Senate set to vote on a statewide ERA referendum, two undecided senators Sen. Bobby Lee Combs and Sen. Wesley Webster said they would oppose holding the vote. A Monday poll showed 23 in favor and 23 against with four undecided, including Combs, Webster, Sen. Melvin R. Daniels, and Sen. J. C. Crawford. Crawford was expected to back the referendum. Capitol protestors gathered as ERA opponents picketed Gov. Jim Hunt’s office.

Carter asks Congress to create a new Department of Energy

President Carter sends a proposal to form a Department of Energy by merging nine existing agencies with about 20 000 workers and a 1978 budget over 10.6 billion. The plan abolishes FEA ERDA and FPC, shifts offshore leasing duties partly to Interior, and places several programs under the new department while seeking better interdepartmental coordination.

Father pleads to let son die in tragic case

Rochester Anderson dies at 71 famed Benny valet

Eddie Rochester Anderson, the raspy voiced valet on Jack Benny's show, died in Los Angeles at age 71 from congestive heart failure. A Mission Country House spokesperson said he had been admitted December 17. Born September 18, 1905 in Oakland, he was survived by his former wife Eva, daughters Stephanie and Evangela, and son Edmond.
