U S air power bombed trenches close to the lines as casualties appeared light, with commanders calling it a major probe despite the scale of attacks along the base.
Michigan Governor George Romney says he will not endorse Nelson Rockefeller or any other candidate for the Republican presidential nomination. He quit the race and aims to work with governors and party leaders to back a candidate acceptable to most. He will join in supporting whatever candidate the governors and others agree upon and has not urged supporters in New Hampshire to back Rockefeller.
In New York the riot report drew praise from Roy Wilkins and Floyd McKissick who call the study a candid critique of white racism across American life. Senator Edward Brooke and leaders like Everett Dirksen and Gerald Ford were cautiously receptive, while Atlanta Mayor Ivan Allen supports city level action to implement recommendations.
