National Guardsmen aided the fight as 66 forest fires ravaged the coastal plain. Fires were the worst in state history with high winds and scattered showers providing little relief. Threats near Mateeba Gardens and Summerville were cleared by bulldozers while a major fire raged between Ruby and Chesterfield.
President Truman may allow a Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee to inspect State Department loyalty files as part of probes into Communist influence. An administration official cited the possibility, noting Republican demand for witnesses present during any viewing. Secretary Acheson defended past actions while acknowledging Hiss’s conviction, saying he would not tolerate disloyalty.
A farm couple Chalmers Craig 31 and Bernadine Craig 26 and three teenagers Ralph Bell 18 Norma Resser 17 Gale Kirkpatrick 19 were killed in a head-on collision on a country road two and a half miles northeast of Arrowsmith Illinois. One teenage girl was seriously injured. The crash involved Craig's car and a second vehicle carrying two young couples.

The leopard that fled Lincoln Park zoo for about 61 hours and caused a citywide stir died from a collapsed lung after the chase. Veterinarian W O Bowerman ruled out bait drug as the cause and noted prior pneumonia with scar tissue. The animal’s escape began Saturday from an 18 foot pit, sparking three days of excitement.
A six hour fire in Spokane destroyed most of the Ridpath hotel, forcing evacuation of 250 guests and residents. The Halliday hotel was emptied as flames threatened both structures, four firefighters were overcome, and damage was estimated by a local manager. The Red Cross set up an emergency center and broadcast updates before authorities contained the blaze.
An early morning crash four miles north of Warsaw killed Rocky Mount businessman H. D. Privette and injured the Black driver Ernest Knight. Privette owned a supermarket and restaurant. Knight was not hospitalized. State Patrol said the southbound car skidded on a curve and overturned en route from Rocky Mount to Carolina Beach.

Five Black residents, two men and three children, were found slain in adjoining Cairo homes. Jim Turner, 76, a Baptist preacher, and three Turner children were killed with an ice pick and ax. J. T. Turner Jr., 8, Jimmie Lou, 10, Bobbie Joe, 4, died in the Turner residence. John Harvey Arline, 50, a fellow preacher, was shot in the adjacent house. A shotgun lay under a bed. Hattie Mae Turner, 32, wife of Jim Turner, was held for investigation by Deputy Sheriff H. L. Lunsford.

They noted rough roadbed and motion in the tunnel and said he fell about 45 seconds after entering the tunnel while returning to his compartment from the dining car.
