Tar Heels Cited For Heroism
Three North Carolinians were named by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission for brave acts. A Winston-Salem man and a highway patrol trooper received bronze medals and $750 each for rescuing five boys from an ice-covered pond on January 18. The third recipient, Howard P. Carpenter Jr. of New Bern, is a 14-year-old who saved a girl and helped rescue a boy on April 15, 1963. James L. Williams of Winston-Salem risked his life trying to save two boys from the same ice. State Trooper William Lloyd Garrison aided in the rescue. In New Bern, Katherine F. Koonce, 14, and others assisted a drowning boy but both perished.
