Alf M. Landon, 1936 Republican candidate, endorsed President Truman’s bi partisan plan to unite support for a foreign policy aimed at a republic of nations to safeguard future peace. The president prepared to urge early ratification of the San Francisco peace charter in a message to Congress.
The House approved a Senate-endorsed compromise 225 to 94 to extend wartime price controls by one year option. Republican opposition failed to restore Rep Andresen’s bid to grant virtual czar-like powers to Secretary of Agriculture Clinton P. Anderson in food matters.
Senator Fulbright leads a senate committee bid to amend the Bretton Woods plan. The effort seeks a financial reckoning with allied nations before the plan takes effect, covering World War I debts lend-lease commitments and sterling-area debts in Egypt and India.
Southern senators dropped their filibuster against the fair employment practice committee. After a secret strategy meeting they relinquished the attempt to monopolize Senate debate and allowed a direct showdown on the FEPC money question delaying the war agencies appropriation bill for three days.
The War Labor Board warned 16,790 Akron rubber workers at Goodyear plants that union contract rights could be withdrawn if the two week strike does not end. Chairman George W. Taylor said the board would decide whether to modify directives on maintenance of membership and check-off, plus shift premium and vacation, if work is not resumed.
Columbus June 30 Governor Lausche directed Ohio selective service to proceed with the induction of striking Goodyear workers in Akron. He said warriors bleeding for freedom cannot have deferments for civilian war workers and demanded leaders of the defiance be dealt with vigorously.
Taylor cites defiance by local union officers of a board order and questions whether maintaining membership is influenced by the dispute.
Raleigh reports farmers in the South rapidly building and stocking farm ponds to ease shortages. In North Carolina 569 planned ponds with 298 built show a strong postwar push. Ponds yield 200 to 500 pounds of pan fish yearly and require simple fertilization and maintenance.
In Swannanoa North Carolina district the Mascot Baptist church removed a service flag gold star and awarded it to Pfc. George A. Eddieman who was believed killed in action in the Philippines. He returned on furlough from Moore General Hospital, answered the church roll call, and walked to the altar to accept the star. During his 60 day leave he married an old sweetheart and anticipates civilian life soon.
A glider army transport team reached Shangri-la valley in New Guinea and rescued five more people from the 10,000 foot mountains. Previous day’s operation saved a WAC corporal and two airmen from a crash. Today four Filipino parachute troopers and cameraman Alexander Cann were removed, with four more to be recovered.
Two anonymous calls led to discovery of an unidentified woman’s slashed body in the Park West hotel. The victim, about 35, wore a slip and had three stab wounds. no weapon recovered. A man registered with her was detained for questioning.
Allied air force intensified the B 29 campaign targeting Nippon oil facilities. Nearly 50 Superforts struck the Kudanatsu refinery on Honshu’s southwest coast while Tokyo radio reported further raids near Hokkaido. Navy communiques noted Kume island in the central Ryukyus may offer small craft ports and airstrip sites.
The 21st Bomber Command announced a Kudamatsu raid after nearly 500 Superforts hit Sasebo and Okayama on Kyushu and Honshu. Since May 10, B 29s destroyed major oil and fuel facilities, with partial assessments at several plants and storage tanks. total enemy shipping losses rise to 290,000 tons.
North Carolina sweltered with the hottest weather of the year as Charlotte reached 103 degrees near the all time high. Greensboro posted 101, Durham 99, Raleigh 97, and Asheville 94 amid two weeks of heat with little rainfall. A Sudan Temple noble collapsed at Kinston during a Sudan Shriners ceremony.
Chinese high command announced Liuchow, former U.S. air base in Kwangsi, was retaken at midnight after bitter combat in the suburbs. The city center lay in flames. Linchow to the northeast remained under tense threat as Chinese lines pressed toward the area.
The House committee on un American activities ordered an investigation into a "dangerous plot" to overthrow the government. Rankin said headquarters are in Hollywood and investigators would be sent to the west coast immediately. He called the information the greatest hotbed of subversive activities in the United States.
In Augusta Maine a flash fire killed Foseton Berry 35 and his wife Clara 35 and four children Beulah 8 Luella 7 Adin 5 Eugene Mallon 3. Carlton Berry 18 aided Dr McKay in identifying the victims. Neighbors helped as loss is unofficially placed at 1500 dollars.
North Carolina senators in Hendersonville concluded their informal summer gathering after editors’ criticisms. They felt the exchange of ideas was helpful and discussed making the meetings an annual event in different state sections. Senator Hugh Mitchell of Iredell chaired the session.
Manila dispatch reports a 50 ship Allied fleet bombarded Balikpapan’s oil refinery and surrounding defenses for two days in preparation for an imminent landing. Allied mine sweepers braved Japanese shore batteries as preparations continued.
Nipponese planes struck American air fields on Okinawa and near Iwo Jima with prominent fire and special attack aircraft. Domei cited Tokyo's need to reserve many planes for defending against an anticipated Allied invasion of the Japanese home islands.
The Japanese report small allied craft moved under heavy bombardments for close reconnaissance. Gen Douglas MacArthur confirmed light naval units bombarded oil fields along the eastern Borneo coast and raided shore targets south of Tarakan as eight cruisers ten destroyers and minesweepers conducted furrow bombardments of coastal installations.
The Senate foreign relations committee decided to open hearings on the United Nations charter July 9 with Edward R. Stettinius Jr. likely as the first witness. Chairman Connally said the vote was unanimous and that next week will be used by the State Department to assemble documents for the hearings. Sessions will be public in the Senate office building near the Capitol.
U S forces in Mindanao push a record aerial resupply with 155 mm ammunition, cigarettes and plasma dropped by C 47 transports as weather, terrain, and mud hinder ground routes. Division leaders decide drop zones. air strips enable near front lines.
