Asheville Salvage Co. Fire Destroys Building in Candler
A large fire gutted the Asheville Salvage Co. building in nearby Candler Monday night. Nine fire departments fought the blaze and kept flames from reaching a dry cleaning shop, a TV shop, and the Enka-Candler Record. Traffic on U.S. 1923 West was halted for miles. Water supply stretched as hydrants proved insufficient. Earl Worley of Candler, who reported the incident, said he was leading his cow to water when the fire began.

Man Without Fingerprints Dies in Columbia Prison
Robert James Pitts, known as the man without fingerprints, died at the South Carolina Central Corrections Institution in Columbia from a heart attack.
