Cosmonautess Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to orbit Earth in Vostok VI in 1963. Her companion Valery Bykovsky orbited nearby as the two ships crossed paths. Tereshkova completed 48 orbits in a 70 hour mission, landing northeast of Karaganda, Kazakhstan.
President Nixon’s confidence in the economy contrasts with a local reader who notes a salary jump from 100000 to 200000 and still cannot save. A drainage piping question leads to a suggestion to contact Armco in Charlotte for suitable metal pipes.
The Dow Jones and Company compiles the averages in points to reflect price trends of stocks and bonds. They use a weighted list of 30 industrials 20 utilities and a combined 65-stock average with a flexible divisor that adjusts for splits and dividends. The origin traces to 1897 with 12 stocks and a shifting divisor first set at 16.67 in 1928 and now about 2163. The Supreme Court, acting on Justice Department guidance, delays ruling on Charlotte-Mecklenburg desegregation and bus plan. It leaves jurisdiction with the Charlotte federal court and contemplates possible summer action, while agreeing to hear two other cases next term. Justice Black dissented.
