Pellagra Colony Planned in Brunswick County Experiment

Raleigh June 28 The plan, backed by the state board of health and the Carolina council on nutrition with Red Cross aid, aims to create an experimental pellagra colony at Brunswick County Hospital. Patients would be fed a balanced diet for six weeks to two months and taught to prepare and share the diet to curb malnutrition and prevent recurrence. If successful, similar colonies may be established in other counties facing pellagra. The Wilmington conference, called by Lindsay Russell, gathered health officials from North and South Carolina and Red Cross representatives to advocate malnutrition abolition and pellagra prevention, noting the disease’s high southern death toll alongside tuberculosis.
