In Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania a conference between John L Lewis and President Harding produced optimism across the anthracite fields. The adjournment of the general state committee and abandonment of immediate strike plans led miners to expect a return to work by July. Celebrations followed the news with more planned.
Luther T. Blackwell of Stokes County was arrested in Atlanta with a young woman identified as Nina Thompson of Columbus. Police say Blackwell admitted a $20 000 shortage in his post office accounts while the couple registered as Mr and Mrs R T Walker at a local hotel. A hotel room robbery attempt by a bellboy prompted the arrest.
A serious battle between regular Irish and irregular troops raged near Dublin’s Four Courts. Machine guns fired as the forces contested the seized complex, with Four Courts and Fowler Memorial barracks replying to the assault. Irregulars seized Moran’s hotel and other nearby buildings.
President Harding will summon a group of representative coal operators from across the United States to Washington Saturday to discuss a possible conference with the miners union to fix wage bases to end the bituminous coal strike. An official announcement will follow later today.
The National federation of music clubs will conduct state district and national contests for young professional musicians trained in the United States in 1923. State contests run February 15 to March 30, district contests April 15 to May 5, and the national contest in June with the exact date to be announced. Singers violinists and pianists compete to recognize top American teachers pupils and to boost professional careers.
Miss Esther Johnston of the New York Public Library spoke at the American Library Association convention in Detroit about translating American titles for immigrants. The New York committee and the American Library Association work with the foreign born to select books for translation, with a 1921 list of about fifty titles and a 1922 focus on translating into Yiddish.

Mrs. Flucretia Be Rothrock, 81, dies at her home south of Thomasville after a life of service to the Fair Grove Methodist Church. Her son Marvin R. Rothrock cared for her until death. Also noted are a hospital admission for appendicitis, opening of a Lutheran church on Salem street, arrival of a new $12,000 fire engine, garden seed varieties at Chas. R. Thomas, local visits, and James Brewer's four month sentences for liquor offenses.
The Holy See says Jews in Palestine must have equal civic rights with other nationalities. It cannot allow a privileged position or safeguards for Christians, in a letter to the League of Nations dated June 28.
Two year old D W Ball Jr was struck by a car driven by Miss Catheryine Brawley while crossing Fifth street. The boy fell along the fender and rolled aside but suffered only bruises with no broken bones after arrival at a local hospital. Witnesses call the incident unavoidable.
Jacob Heath about 30 shot himself dead with a revolver at his home in the lower part of Lenoir county late Monday. The coroner found Heath had threatened suicide and had been drinking. He leaves a widow and two children.
One hundred five striking miners and sympathizers were arrested at Thomas and held for hearings after attempting to block entrance to a mine. Sheriff Clouse and ten deputies boarded them onto a special train to Parsons for processing.
Memphis Tennessee June 28. Attacks on Southern Association umpires hereafter will draw a suspension of at least thirty days for the offending player regardless of his previous good record for observance of the rules John D Martin president of the association announced tonight.
Ingineer E. J. Ringling of the Winston-Salem southbound railway died suddenly of heart failure in his cab as his train stopped at Whitney. He had left home that morning on passenger No. 61 bound for Wadesboro, apparently in good health.
Irish Republican Army troops evacuated Fowler hall this afternoon and moved to a large hotel owned by Alderman Moran. They began setting up defensive positions there as security forces monitoring the situation.
A ship was reported burning off Ventura California with a radio distress call picked up at 12:30 this morning at the Los Angeles submarine base. A steamer in the area reported cruising to locate the burning vessel as fog shrouds the coastline near Ventura.
Washington reports that a New York Essex county demonstration shows rapid cattle TB testing possible. Twenty five veterinarians and volunteers tested 920 herds or 5 274 cattle in two days using efficient routes and autos cutting costs by more than half.
Mailand J. Johnson aged 31 died at 6 oclock this morning in a city hospital after a weeklong illness from appendicitis. He worked for High Point hosiery mills and is survived by wife Eva Payne Johnson, mother Laurenia Johnson, three brothers Harrison Webster and M r L Johnson, and six sisters. Funeral Monday at 11 at Mechanicsville Primitive Baptist church with Rev. P. W. Williard officiating. Burial in church graveyard. The body lies at his brother in law T A Paynes home three miles west of the city.
Senator Myers of Montana warned in the Senate that if the Herrin mine massacre rioters are not punished the U S government could end. He cited the coroner jury verdict and urged punishment of the guilty while condemning state and national officials for neglect of duty.
Preparations are complete for the cornerstone ceremony at the new Methodist Protestant college on Greensboro Boulevard in High Point tomorrow. Dr. T H Lewis of Washington will deliver the principal address, with J F Minnis to be ordained and the Roberts hall administration building named in memory of J C Roberts. The event includes music by a concert band and a lunch on the grounds, with hundreds expected to attend from across the state.
Washington June 28. Senate delays adjournment as Senator Curtis Kansas attempts to push a resolution granting Senate consent to adjournment. The plan would have set the session to close August 8 but awaits consultation with Democratic leaders of both houses.

Nashville Tenn June 28 A goal of 600000 converts during the next year was fixed at the evangelistic program of Southern Baptists at a meeting here of the convert committee of the 75 million campaign and other leaders from all sections of the south. Other organizations also will be called on to join the original machinery in carrying out the campaign.
The Kiwanis Club 70 at a luncheon in the Sheraton hotel endorsed establishing a boys camp at Hayworth Springs. The club offered to guarantee 150 for immediate work and was told the old dam could be repaired for a few hundred dollars. The committee reported finding no suitable site but recommended accepting the free offer. William E Rhodes, industrial engineer, spoke on conditions in North Carolina and other states and praised High Point’s furniture industry.
Mor ris Shinderman a Chicago diamond broker told police he was robbed of 65000 dollars in diamonds and jewelry while traveling from St Louis to Mexico Missouri yesterday.

In Hertford on June 17 a jury is to be selected for the trial of M C Sullivan former cashier of the Farmers Bank and Trust company. He is charged with misappropriating 60400 of the bank funds by Perquimans court proceedings scheduled to start today.
