Margaret Decker and Viola Choplosky are the only licensed women blasters in Pennsylvania. Choplosky works at a family flagstone quarry near Hop Bottom in Susquehanna County while Decker in Pittsburgh is on call to blast rock blocks for excavation projects.
Mrs. Choplosky and Mrs. Decker emerge as early female dynamiters in Pennsylvania. The Choploskys run a 200 acre farm quarry and dairy with eight children. Mrs. Choplosky often sets charges while her husband and sons drill. Mrs. Decker, 34, heads a family excavation firm supervising a six man crew and holds a license while her husband handles the digging. She plans to supervise pit checks and placement rather than digging herself.
