North Carolina House Kills Extra Sales Tax Measure
The North Carolina House voted 64 to 40 to defeat a bill allowing a 1 percent sales tax to fund counties and cities. Sponsor Rep. Donald Stanford said it would raise about $40 million yearly for counties and $18 million for municipalities, while opponents called it discriminatory against urban areas. The same session saw the Senate back a State Department of Correction plan replacing the State Prison Department, with a seven member Commission of Correction and allowances for inmate wages up to $1 a day. The Senate also advanced non capital crime release reform, higher driver license fees, and a tax realignment on real estate transfers to counties.
