Odd Polynesian twin hull craft challenges yachts off Santa Monica
The strange twin hull craft of ancient Polynesian design, named Waikiki Surf, challenged orthodox ocean racing yachts in Santa Monica. Skipper Nowell said the 12 crewed catamaran could beat the best yachts by days, claiming speeds from 5 to 9 knots in favorable winds. The 22 hundred mile crossing would test its plywood and fiberglass two hulls with a light 1.5 ton weight and a 27 foot length, crew including Chaylene Brown and Coast Guard navigator Richard Muirhead.
