Herald and Examiner reports sculptor Rob Irwin surrendered at the Chicago newspaper office and police headquarters after a nationwide manhunt. He allegedly killed Veronica Ged and others, saying his aim was to kill Veronica’s sister Ethel, whom he loved but who married another man. He confessed to strangling Ged and Byrnes during a planned attack linked to the Ged family.

Two Thomasville Men Killed in Early Morning Car Crash

Two Thomasville men died instantly when two cars collided near Unity Chapel church on the outskirts of Thomasville at 1 am. Paul Kennedy and L Berrier Jr died, Linda Collins of Greensboro is in critical condition, Wilbur Hifton and a fourth person were injured. Police investigate as one car burned after impact and both vehicles were demolished.

Hoppers to Save Pennies in North Carolina Sales Tax

Plane Crash Claims Two Army Officers in Monti monsville

In Montimonsville Alabama two Army officers Captain Marion Huggins and Dr. B B Turner died when an Army plane piloted by Captain Huggins side-slipped and crashed in a street. Thadeus Seine a University of South Carolina student was killed. wires were downed but no other injuries reported.

British freighter Sandgate Castle crew feared lost at sea

The 60 aboard the Sandgate Castle sent an SOS saying she was burning and the crew abandoned ship as the President Pierce sped toward the wreck 350 miles north northeast of Bermuda and 650 miles southeast of New York. Sheriff Roy C. Hoover reported an unidentified man killed near Concord was struck by a vehicle and not ejected from one. The body was found near Rocky River after witnesses said he was walking earlier and spoke with station staff about 30 minutes prior. Woman and dog shot to death near Darien Brunswick

A woman tentatively identified as Mrs. Caroline Bolden of Detroit, 40, and her dog were found shot to death in a car five miles north of Darien, MacIntosh County. Spanish Merchant Vessel Palos Sunk by Submarine

The Spanish cargo ship Palos, carrying foodstuffs, was sunk by a submarine near Point Machoh about 60 miles south of Valencia. Five crew members died, forty four survivors were rescued by Alicante after drifting six hours in lifeboats, with Captain Manuel Hoyds reporting a sudden torpedo strike as the vessel sank at dawn.

Woman Fatally Hacked in Prince Frederick Md

A Washington woman was killed by Wilson Jones Jr who seized a butcher knife after a scolding incident about cuffing his wife. Police charged Jones with murder after the slaying occurred at a rural Prince Frederick scene following a car trip with his wife and a neighbor.
