Police Buy Bugging Devices in Carolinas
The National Wiretap Commission says authorities in the Carolinas have purchased at least nine wiretapping devices from Audio Intelligence Devices of Fort Lauderdale since 1973. The devices include a standard attache case with hidden mics a socket like bug and a small transmitter for phones. Federal law bans possession of covert bugging gear by police unless state law allows it. North and South Carolina have no such law. The commission notes police may use equipment when one party is aware, such as undercover cases, but distinguishing legal from illegal gear remains a problem.
