The AMA urged doctors to bill patients directly under a plan allowing patients over 65 to pay the full charge and seek 80 percent reimbursement from Medicare through an intermediary carrier. The proposal, debated at a daylong session, would take effect July 1 and uses the form of billing with a $50 annual deductible.
In North Carolina Fifth District primary, Nick Galifianakis defeats Smith Bagley for the Democratic nomination and advances to face Republican G Fred Steele Jr. in the November general. Forrest Cates reports Gibson won the Democratic runoff for Guilford County sheriff, defeating Thurman Jones 7 939 to 5 223 in 13 162 ballots. Gibson carried most areas except Negro precincts and rural Guilford, with High Point close and Negro Precinct No 6 backing Jones. Gibson, a 21 year sheriff's department veteran and captain chief in Greensboro, will vie in November.
Allen defeats King 9 359 to 6 118 in the 19th Senatorial District primary to face Gilmore in November. The newcomer led in Davidson Montgomery counties and across all 103 precincts, signaling King will not seek re election.
