Sign Rigging Contention Attacked in Raleigh Trial

Defense sought to undermine state claims that former highway engineer Robert A. Burch rigged sign specifications to favor Newark firms. W. A. Bank Robbery in Cleveland North Carolina

A tall armed robber robbed the Northwestern Bank of North Wilkesboro in Cleveland at 3:45 a.m. forcing cashier Henry Young to fill a bag with about $15,000, then shot him in a vault and fled in a black 1960 Ford. He is described as 6-2, solidly built, tan, 36 to 38, wearing khaki. | The getaway route ran west on U S 70 then left Baker's Mill Road. the car was abandoned on a dirt road and a second vehicle used. May Cost Of Living Unchanged At 105.2 Index

The May consumer price index stayed at 105.2, with lower food and fuel costs offsetting higher housing and medical costs. Deputy Labor official Robert J. Myers called the unchanged figure a welcome respite, but a June rise is expected. Factory workers also saw record after tax earnings and longer work hours, with a family of four earning $86.05 weekly.
