Powell Dismissed as SBI Director in Morale Shakeup
James W. Powell was fired as director of the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation by Attorney General George B. Patton. Patton cited very low morale and said action was needed to preserve the agency. Powell alleged star chamber procedures and a smear campaign, while Patton said an internal investigation drove the decision. No successor named.
