British bomber forces hit Bochum and Gelsenkirchen in the Ruhr, aiming to neutralize the industrial valley. Observers estimate about 30 000 tons of bombs since the campaign began, with 500 bombers lost and 3 000 men killed or captured.

Barbara Jane Cox becomes the first British American war baby christened in Ulster. She is the infant daughter of U S Navy Lieut. A M Cox of Mobile Alabama and his wife from Portush County Antrim. Graham Register of Deeds J G Tingen questioned an applicant's age for a license. Dr Will Long, a local dentist, examined the youth and confirmed fully developed wisdom teeth and a perfect molar set, asserting the applicant is over 21. License issued.
The Con nally Smith Harness Bill led to fast action turning wartime labor policy into law. Congress overrode President Roosevelt for the eighth time since 1933, placing fines and imprisonment on wartime strikes in government plants and extending War Labor Board powers. Coal miners walkouts and new strikes prompted fear of effects at the arsenal of democracy.
