The Evangelical Reformed and Congregational Christian churches, totaling over two million members, announced a merger to form the United Church of Christ effective June 2 1957. A joint constitution is planned for 1956 57 as studies on union continue.
A two week Bible School session at Allen Jay Baptist Church ends with commencement exercises. Faculty includes principal Mrs C O Lewis and instructors Mrs Reid McRae L G Ethrige J E Weaver Mrs James Green Mr and Mrs Billy McDowell Mrs G H Wallace. Superintendent Miss Gwen Horn oversees all departments of the Bible school.
A returning group of 186 Austrians said 16 Americans were in Soviet labor camps. They named six, including Ray Tennille of Georgia and Murray Feingersch of Brooklyn, with others unidentified. Several prisoners were described as ill or incapacitated.
Miss Dorothy May Wells a 21 year old bride to be from St. Petersburg Florida, recently graduated from West Point, fell to her death from an eighth floor window ledge in a Chicago Michigan avenue office building. Police found her red shoes and matching purse near the window with papers inside. A witness who found her on the open ledge said she appeared to attempt climbing back inside before the fatal plunge. Her fiancé, a recent Army graduate, said she suffered from a nervous condition and had come to Chicago two weeks ago to stay with his parents. He noted she had worked as a typist for a magazine firm and was to return to Florida today.
The Indian air force reports 15 air force and four army personnel died in a crash involving two Dakota planes. No senior officials or foreigners were involved. The incident occurred today in New Delhi.
The 10th anniversary UN session is shadowed by the Soviet MiG attack that damaged an American naval plane over the Bering Sea. Eleven crew members aboard survived with seven hurt. Raleigh reports small overall employment changes from April to May with factory payrolls totaling about 426 000. Average hourly earnings rose from 1.26 to 1.28 and weekly pay climbed from 46.75 to 50.04 as the work week lengthened from 37.1 to 38 hours. Increases appear in money terms across timber products furniture and other sectors while tobacco and construction show modest gains and retail wholesale trade rises slightly.
Lt. Richard H. Fischer reported Russian MIGs shot at a U.S. Navy patrol bomber near St. Lawrence Island, wounding three crew and forcing a fiery landing at Gambel. The left wing and fuselage were torn, fires raged, yet all 11 aboard escaped with minor injuries as the plane was rescued by Gambel air service.
