Children Of Battery Plant Workers Get Lead Poison
Seven children of workers at ESB Inc. Wisco battery plant in Raleigh were treated at North Carolina Memorial Hospital for indirect lead poisoning. Of 55 children screened, 13 referred for further evaluation and seven had high blood lead levels. four required hospitalization. Ages ranged from 10 months to 6 1/2 years. The poisoning likely came from lead dust tracked home on clothing and food contamination. Plant safety measures include uniforms laundered daily, mandatory head covers, showers, and enhanced ventilation.
