A brief tornadic storm hit Wrightsville Beach North Carolina late yesterday causing major damage to at least 12 houses and minor damage to nearly 12 more. Officials estimate damage at 55000 to 70000 dollars with winds over 65 miles per hour and no injuries.
French Foreign Minister Pham Van Dong met with Jean Chauvel as Mendes France seeks a peace path in Indochina. Officials said talks hint at possible concessions by France while Geneva sessions await further progress and Chou En-lai prepares for a New Delhi meeting.
Newspapers say Sen Joseph McCarthy named Donald Surine to preliminarily probe the CIA while Surine reportedly lacks federal security clearance. Surine told a Washington reporter he knows nothing about the assignment as subcommittee scrutiny mounts over his eligibility to receive classified documents.

Des Moines faces a three day flood battle climax with the Des Moines River cresting just over 30 feet, higher than normal. Levees held, guards kept sightseers away, and evacuees planned returns within the next three to four years as minor leaks persisted.
In Fayetteville a 25 year old Negro, Herbert Patterson, testified he was recruited to a Georgia work camp at 1.40 per hour, forced to clear land under armed guards, locked at night, and that his right index finger was severed during his escape. Authorities said the case was continued to verify the tale. The FBI declined comment on any investigation.
A lone bandit robbed the Branch Banking and Trust Co in Fremont, 12 miles north of Goldsboro. FBI says the bank employee rough estimated the loot at between $18,000 and $20,000.

Washington The chairman of the House Armed Services Committee Rep Short says Americans have been swindled by servicemen fraudulently claiming benefits for parents. He cites Project Big and states about 30 percent of secondary allotments for Army personnel are fraudulent with large legal actions pending.
