London diplomatic circles report Prince von Buelow, former German chancellor, traveling to Washington on a special mission and possibly becoming ambassador to the United States. The exchange Telegraph company cites sources in London on May 24.
Curtis Sappenfield a white man was acquitted on prohibition charges after three whisky bottles and four corks were found with him. Judge Dalton ruled evidence insufficient and noted suspicions remained but not enough for conviction. His attorney claimed the quart was split to avoid bulk and restored to one quart. John Pearce from Thomasville was fined costs for riding a freight train.
Washington reports a new Carranza note will be sent by special messenger from Mexico City. Officials say the exact contents are unknown and the note should reach the U S capital late next week amid signs of friendlier official tone toward the United States.
Washington officials express skepticism about a report that Prince von Buelow will visit Washington on a special mission for Emperor William. The German embassy has no knowledge of any plan and London-originated claims are regarded as unlikely. Officials doubt von Buelow would replace Count von Bernstorff amid submarine controversy.

Prosecutors reported no evidence presented. Davis denies throwing rocks but admits presence with other youths. McCorkle, badly injured, underwent surgery at High Point hospital and was reported improving after skull fracture. Authorities continue searching for other youths involved in the assault incident.
News from Marseilles May 24 reports the French steamship Languedoc 1612 tons sunk in the Mediterranean on Saturday by a submarine. Captain Pierre Battisti was taken prisoner aboard the submarine after attempting to defend the vessel. One crew member was killed, two seriously wounded, and ten others slightly injured.
Raleigh May 24 The St Marys school board voted to launch a campaign to raise 250000 for new buildings endowment and debt relief. Rev I W Hughes of Henderson will chair the committee with Graham H Andrews of Raleigh and George C Royall of Goldsboro assisting. The goal covers 100000 for buildings 100000 for endowment and 4000 to clear debts.
Two new sixty horsepower aeroplanes arrived in Columbus New Mexico yesterday as military aviators began preparing them for field service. General Pershing expeditionary commander had pressed for machines for scouting purposes.
The naval appropriation bill totaling 241 million dollars was reported to the House by the Naval Committee. Majority Leader Aitchin said a special rule would speed passage within a week from next Saturday. The measure increases by 98.9 million to fund new ships and continued work on existing vessels for Navy preparedness.
Raleigh May 24 A spectacular parade led by the Mystic Shrine featured about 250 candidates in the Oasis temple annual pilgrimage. Notables in the procession wore convict garb overalls and female attire. A noon lunch for 1200 occurred in a park and later ceremonies included initiation of candidates followed by a banquet and grand ball.
Senator Callinger proposes a tonnage tax plan to strengthen the American merchant marine by taxing inbound vessels from Western Hemisphere ports that are American-built and owned. The plan also imposes a 10 percent discriminating duty on imports in foreign bottoms and sets tonnage limits from three to fifteen cents per ton yearly, with higher rates for foreign-flag and non-American ships.
James J. Hill III of St Paul Minnesota, railroad builder and capitalist, has been ill and absent from his office since last Wednesday, causing concern among friends and business associates.
Winston-Salem reporters note the community tercentenary Shakespearean celebration, delayed from Tuesday by rain, will take place Thursday night on the Salem college campus with likely student and local participation.

Dublin May 24 John MacNeill president of Sinn Fein volunteers is found guilty by court martial of complicity in the Irish rebellion. The sentence will be announced in a day or so.
Washington May 24 The senate committee on foreign relations recommended a favorable report of Senator Kerns resolutions directing the secretary of state to inquire regarding the safety of American citizens in Ireland where martial law has been proclaimed in the district.
Reports from the standing committees on foreign missions and Christian visitation and ministerial relief were to lead the agenda for the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Orlando. A further special order concerned cities seeking to host the 1917 convention.

Washington May 24 The senate judiciary committee voted 11 to 8 to report favorably the nomination of Louis D Brandeis to be associate justice of the Supreme Court. It was a strict party vote with Senator Shields voting for the favorable report. He arrived in Isnoexville this morning before the meeting and conferred with Senator Hoke Smith. He would not indicate how he would vote. If he had opposed the report the committee would have sent the nomination to the senate without recommendation. Brandeis’ friends predict confirmation will follow shortly.
In Albemarle a special court term convened to try C B Burgin Fred Wolfe John Adams and Lester Horne all charged with the murder April 6 of B Cantrell a Winston Salem merchant Burgin formerly worked on a Badin power project and was alleged to have arranged a settlement with Cantrell prior to his beating and death A Cantrell confession identified two more suspects and Burgin faced charges of inciting the crime.
Birmingham Alabama was chosen as the 1917 meeting place for the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of the United States. Invitations were extended by Chattanooga Tennessee Durant Oklahoma and Charlestown West Virginia and three ballots were needed to decide.
