Catawba's Chub Kirkland Dies at 48
Gordon A. Kirkland known as Chubby, long time athletic director and former Catawba College football coach, dies at 48 in Salisbury North Carolina from heart trouble. He led 14 seasons with 106 wins 32 losses 8 ties and 2 851 points 970 margin. His teams won eight conference titles and posted post season Tangerine Bowl wins in 1946 and 1947. He also coached baseball and served as athletic director. Survivors include wife Alene Savage Kirkland son Gordon A. Kirkland Jr daughter Martha Janet brothers R M Kirkland George F Kirkland sister Mrs M Z Rhodes burial at City Park cemetery with services at First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in City Park cemetery. Funeral 2 30 p m tomorrow. He was a Presbyterian elder and Kiwanis member.

Two Young Men Killed and Injured In Salem Freight Accident
A shifting load of heavy timbers on a freight car crushed two Atlanta youths early today. Alex Bailey, 20, was killed. James Spradlin, 19, suffered severe back and leg injuries and was hospitalized. Officials say the pair were hoboing to Salem from Charlotte when the accident occurred.
