In Fayetteville on June 21 four Lillington men charged with a $44,000 Angier bank robbery saw bond halved. They remain held for trial at Raleigh October term. Most loot recovered. U S Commissioner T L Hon lowered bonds for James A Murchison and David Watkins.
In Fayetteville on June 21 a 21 year old man named James Edward Phillips was found shot to death about an hour after a girl refused him a swimming date over the phone. Police say the girl did not take his threat seriously and did not reveal her name.
A man identified as Frasheur died at 5 30 am in a hospital from injuries from an accident that occurred the prior day. His son C B Jr died about five hours after the crash.
The WNC Service Guild wraps up a three day annual meeting at Lake Junaluska Methodist Assembly with a record 175 states in attendance. The affiliate of the Methodist Women’s Society of Christian Service held sessions here with 700 WNC delegates present.
Approximately 1,000 convention attendees gathered in Asheville for the Southern Wholesale Confectioners Association three day meeting. W. H. Striplin of Alabama was elected president and M. Bradley of Tennessee became chairman of the board as past president.
Greensboro June 21 Wayne Dernoncourt acting state director of the CIO Textile Workers Union of America denies tentative acceptance of a seven percent pay cut for 350 workers at Barber Mills Lexington. Lewis Conn AFL United Textile Workers says the cut was accepted and blames intra union politics and boss rule by Emil Rieve.
Transylvania Music Camp begins its eighth summer session near the Blue Mountains with 150 campers enrolled, marking a new record as registrations open Thursday.
The New York Herald Tribune will charge 20 cents for its Sunday edition starting June 29, up from 15. The Daily News and Daily Mirror keep Sunday at 10 cents but lift the weekday rate to 4 cents. All cite higher production costs as the reason.

Tokyo reports Allied truce talks to meet Communists on a new chance to explain away their refusal to discuss war prisoners. Major General Harrison said the Communists seemed surprised by Soviet promises about POWs and rejected an indefinite suspension. India offered mediation as Nehru pursued a broader effort to resolve the deadlock at the talks.
The North Carolina Cape Hatteras Seashore Commission voted to ask the Council of State to allocate 500000 to develop a national park on the Outer Banks. The request will be considered when the Council meets in Raleigh on Monday with a matching donation from an unnamed donor.
General Dwight D. Eisenhower demanded an open door policy for the Republican Party and accused Texas Taft supporters of rustling the state birthright. In Sao Paulo state a gun battle recaptured 21 of nearly 300 armed convicts who escaped Anchieta Island prison by stolen boats after killing 15 guards. One convict was killed, a doctor and a radio operator died of wounds, and federal troops along with air and naval forces pursued fugitives to coastal towns including Ubatuba and Caraguatatuba.
