High Point Summer Reading Program Helps 600 Students
About 600 pre school to pre junior high students attend a fifth summer program in High Point funded by federal grants under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The effort uses Brentwood Cloverdale Emma Blair Montlieu and Oak Hill Elementary Schools with roughly 75 staff. The aim is to boost reading skills through individualized instruction and methods like Distar and Alpha programs, with specialists including a speech therapist and a PE instructor. Students respond to engaging activities and field trips as teachers emphasize preparing them to learn in the fall rather than teaching specific subjects.
