President Charles de Gaulle accused Israel and the United States of provoking the current Middle East war and linked it to U S intervention in Vietnam. He denounced Israeli hostilities while urging U S withdrawal from Vietnam to restore world peace. France had previously avoided assigning blame and pressed for united opposition to arms in the region.
Luci Johnson Nugent gave birth to an 8 pound 10 ounce, 21 inch boy at Seton Hospital in Austin. Husband Patrick Nugent announced the birth amid cigars and candy, calling the newborn “an elephant.” President Johnson’s family, including Luci’s mother Lady Bird Johnson, celebrated as reports reached the White House.
The two parties wage a broad drive to win black voters with top operatives Louis Martin for the Democrats and Clarence Townes Jr. for the Republicans traveling to key states. Townes targets New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, California, plus New Jersey, Maryland and Missouri as pivotal battlegrounds. Data show 1964 black support dominated by Democrats though 1966 gains by Republicans. Townes aims for 30 percent black support in 1968. Martin remains confident blacks will choose their own best interests amid party appeals.
In Dixie Hills a curfew was set after a night of rock and gas bomb clashes escalated to gunfire. Timothy Ross, 46, was killed and Reginald Rivers, 9, wounded as police and snipers moved through the V-shaped apartment complex.
At the United Nations the British challenged Israel's plan to keep all of Jerusalem warning it could alienate world opinion and lose support. Israel vowed to retain the Old City, denouncing calls for withdrawal as a territorial aggrandizement.
Police nabbed Michael Natale, 40, carrying a loaded .32 revolver and hunting knife as he tried to gain entry to the Soviet United Nations mission in New York. Kosygin was inside at the time. Natale was taken to a precinct for questioning after a doorbell attempt and barrier breach.
