Roanoke Virginia June 21 Congress George C Peery urged a return to Jeffersonian democracy and a united front against graft while insisting the party defend the 18th amendment and reject combining religion with politics. He assailed recent Republican administrations for corruption and inefficiency.
About 2000 Virginians gathered to elect 24 delegates to the national convention in Houston. Committees worked to finish business as the convention opened at noon with a mood of harmony and forward planning.
Friends of Governor Alfred E. Smith threaten legal action to block use of a news reel in a Yale produced film Deliverance. They argue the excerpt implies Smith signed repealing a prohibition law, while supporters say the scene misrepresents him and would be corrected.
