Pemnican staff honored at Max Ward Delmar awards banquet
High Point Central High School’s 1976 Pemnican staff was praised for top achievement during a recent workshop and will receive free features in the 1976 yearbook. Commissioner Richard Pugh opposed a budget hike, arguing for more funds for the Randolph County Sheriff’s Dept and both school systems. He proposed a five cent tax increase to fund added personnel and equipment, while Commissioner Floyd Langley warned against boosting budget requests by about 50 thousand without a tax rise. The board approved several increases totaling 50 thousand, including 15 thousand for the Chore program, 10,175 to raise women’s salaries in Health and Social Services, and 25,000 for the sheriff’s department to continue the Emergency Employe Program if federal support ends. The vote split along party lines with Republicans opposing the tax increase. The 55 cent tax rate was kept, and capital outlay and current expense funding for schools remained trimmed. The 1975-76 budget remains under the prior year despite being over one million dollars higher in federal and state funds.
