Lockport High Band Crowned National Marching Champion
The Lockport High School band of Illinois, led by director Ernest Caneva, won the national high school marching band title after a 10 day tour. The 103 member ensemble scored top honors among 28 contender bands in Mason City Iowa, part of the North Iowa Band Festival alongside The Music Man premiere. Governor Norman Erbe named Meredith Willson an honorary colonel as 100000 spectators watched the parade and awards at Roosevelt Field.
