Guilford County Democrats elected L. Russell Clark as their new county chairman on the second ballot, defeating Elsie Nuckles after a five candidate field. The 1,100 attendees at Smith High School debated resolutions on equal rights, capital punishment, Wilmington 10, and an elected school board. Clark pledged to train precinct workers, boost voter education, and expand the party newsletter while calling for party unity ahead of fall elections.

Ignorance Not an Excuse in Tax Case Verdict

A federal jury in Greensboro acquitted Lawrence W. Walker, a Moravian Falls sawmill operator, of income tax charges and perjury after his lawyer argued his limited education and low IQ prevented him from understanding or preparing his own returns. An apologist psychologist testified Walker has an IQ of 79 and verbal ability of a fifth grader, suggesting he could not knowingly defraud the government.

Appalachian State University student Mary Kathryn Fleming was crowned Miss North Carolina in Winston-Salem, 21, native of Hamptonville Yadkin County. She sang Everything in talent and won preliminary swimsuit. First runner up Sonja Y Miller Beulaville. second Jerilyn Johnson Maiden.
